Interview with Roamcouch

Roamcouch is a Japanese stencil artist, and an urban, contemporary master in his own right. He brings new meaning to “stencilism,” and produces meticulously detailed and rich stencil paintings on canvas, and clean-cut screen prints on paper.
Some describe his work ethic as that of a modern master, because he can take up to a year to create one piece of his work. His stencils involve an unfathomable and highly professional level of intricacy, with certain images requiring fifty different layers of stencil, which are all hand-drawn and hand-cut. His works involve such detail yet manage to portray a feeling of romanticism and fluidity, through the use of his selected subject matter.
Hi Roamcouch, today you’ll speak with Music On Walls about the importance of music in your art and in your life.
Can you start by telling MoW why you chose to create artworks inspired by music?
Because I wanted to make music to listen with the pictures. I wanted to draw a picture that sounds like music.
Would you say there is a specific music that inspired each of your artworks presented today?
There is no specific music. But they are definitely all the music that I grew up with.
Do the artworks have a name? A meaning?
Midnight Recital and Lethal Weapon.
Regardless of state or location, music has the power to impress people. I think that music can heal people without any problems.
What is the story behind each artwork?
The power of music. I wanted to express it beautifully as a picture.
Do you have plans on creating new artworks inspired by music/musicians ?
Of course I want to create new artworks inspired by music. Music is part of my art and it will not change, ever.
Can you tell Mow more about your techniques and how long does it takes you to make an artwork?
Approximately 3 months is required to make a large mural and I basically use detailed stencils. By coloring a lot of detailed stencils with a gradation, I make a beautiful color.
Why is music important to you, in your life and in your art?
It was my favorite music that gave me the power when I became completely immovable by illness in the past. Of course there was the help from my family. But the fundamental was music. Music has so much great power. I want to be able to feel such power from my painting someday.
Do you listen to music when you're working?
I listen to a great variety of music gender. Jazz, rock, metal, Hip hop, ...

Are you a musician?
I am not a musician, but I can not live without music. I always listen to my favorite music when I make a picture. Musicians may also watch pictures when making music. That's why painters may be similar to musicians.
